Dear Reader:

1968-69 has been an exciting year at E.N.C. Asyou
flip through the pages you will readily observe that
there were some new and interesting social programs,
some new clubs, and a lot of action. I have delib-
erately used the candid pictures to try to capture the
spirit of these events. I have tried to comply with
your suggestions, in making this yearbook a more en-
joyable one for YOU.

Seniors . . . congratulations. I present this book to
you. It has been your year of decisions; decisions that
will determine some of your future, if not in some
cases all of your future life. Life is no easy experience
out there in the "big bad world". You must do your
best. It is so exciting to be living in today's world. So
much to do and so many things to think about.
Apply yourselves and be happy. Happiness will come
after you have succeeded in doing your best. Good
luck and may God bless each one of you.

There have been some people who have been a big
help this year. I would have had to hand out blank
pages, and crayons if it was not for one photographer,
Ken Murphy, and his workers at Dodge-Murphy Pho-
tographers, Inc. Ken certainly has been a big help. His
ideas and suggestions have been incorporated, I hope,
to your approval and enjoyment. Thank you Ken,
you have done an excellent job. Next we have Mr.
Don Doyle, the publisher of our book. He has been in
my office, I don't know how many times, to help me.
' We have sat for hours and just discussed ideas before
we ever laid out any of the pages. Thank you Don,
you've been wonderful. Dr. Kauffman has produced
our art work for the book and helped to coordinate

the entire process, Thank you. Dr. Kauffman for your ^^^H
patience and ability.

If I tried to list all of the people who have helped
me, I fear I would forget some. I have so much en- ^^^H
joyed the willingness on the part of so many students ^^^H
to help with the book. It is your book this year. Your ^^^H
ideas are there and so are many hours of many ^^^H
people's work there. Thank you so much. There are
two people I would like to especially thank for their
help and they are Barb Baker and Sotiros Pole-
menakos. Barb was the literary editor and has done
an excellent job. All of those pictures have captions
because of her. I rest assured her book next year will
be a superb one. Barb, thanks a million. Steve
Polman, as you may know him, has worked very hard ^^^H
on coming up with the money we needed to produce ^^^H
this book for you. Thanks to Steve we were able to ^^^H
have the beautiful color section for Homecoming.

Me, well, I am glad it is all over. I cannot begin to
tell you how much I have learned from his job. Thank
you for giving me this opportunity. I wanted it to be
your book, I hope you have and will enjoy it for ^^^H
many years. ^^BP

Just one last idea; be yourself, your very best self. ^H! y

Life is so much fun that way. Honestly!

You know, this has been a very unusual year at
Eastern Nazarene College. Our school year has been filled
with action — a very versatile kind of action, too. From
panty raids and police participation to accreditation com-
mittees and debate tournaments.

During this year we made a very significant progress.
The Administration has succeeded in their part of the
task in guiding and expanding E.N.C. We have reached
the point when a new gymnasium is no longer a distant
dream but it will rather become a reality in the near
future.

Our Student Council has worked very hard in repre-
senting the students and promoting our welfare. In a time
when student protest and violence is the order of the day,
we have been able to be a part of our world while at the
same time we have kept our Christian standards,- intact.

In dedicating our yearbook we wanted to select some-
one who has made outstanding contributions to our com-
munity, in the academic, religious, and social fields. He is
a man with an open mind and a man who faces student
problems with a great deal of concern and experience. He
is concerned with the academic development of students
for he is one of our most distinguished professors. Out-
side the lecture hall he has successfully helped many of us
in our unique personal problems.

So that at this time I am very privileged to present the
dedication of the 1969 Nautilus to Dr. Donald P.
Brickley.

IN RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION OF

YOUR SINCERE DEDICATION TO THE SEARCH-
ING YOUTH OF EASTERN NAZARENE COLLEGE
AS AN EDUCATOR AND ADMINISTRATION,
YOUR CONCERN FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL AND
THEIR HAPPINESS AS WELL AS YOUR RADIANT
CHRISTIAN CONCERN AND HONESTY,
YOUR WILLINGNESS TO SUBORDINATE YOUR
OWN INTERESTS FOR THAT OF THE STUDENTS,
AND FOR YOUR VALUABLE AND MOST EFFI-
CIENT SERVICE AS DEAN OF STUDENTS,
WE, THE STAFF OF THE 1969 NAUTILUS, TAKE
GREAT PLEASURE IN DEDICATING OUR AN-
NUAL TO YOU . . .

DR. DONALD P. BRICKLEY

Beauty . . . Did you ever really stop to think how
much variation beauty adds to the otherwise monotonous
beat of our lives? The awe we feel when viewing the
masterworks of man: towering skyscrapers, seemingly
reaching for a destination; complex road systems, appear-
ing to seek direction; and works of art, displaying man's
search for himself. Each of these serves to bring a certain
type of beauty into our lives. But not only in these exten-
sions of man can beauty be found, but within man him-
self, there too is beauty, a noble, unexpressible beauty
which, of all of God's living creations, is unique to man-
kind.

Manifested in the works of nature man may also find
beauty, every phase of Nature's accomplishment is beau-
tiful because of its very essense. For example, the dia-
mond, possibly the most beautiful of all of Natures gifts.
Each facet, every edge, sparkles brightly, seemingly so
fragile, yet so hard, sure, and definite. The Nautilus staff
has chosen the diamond, with its possible analogy to
man, as its theme for the 1969 Nautilus. Just as the dia-
mond shines differently for those who view it from
different angles, so the reflection or impression one re-
ceives from another individual is determined by his per-
spective. As each facet of the diamond reflects light in a
different manner, so does each facet of a man's person-
ality display a unique part of his character. Thus, the
staff has designed this yearbook to display these different
facets in the lives of the students of Eastern Nazarene
College.

Form - Movement

Man is so worried
About not being seen
With the out of style
Or the last place team.

"I can't go there,"
Or "what will they say"
Is the common worry
Of Americans today.

Someone else has it.

We're never the one's;

Somebody to follow

Seems to look safest in our long run.

It makes one pause
And stop to ponder
What it is we're looking for
Always just "yonder".

Around each new corner.

In this year's new style.

Is that where happiness has been waiting

All this while?

The answer is yours.
I can't really say.

For I don't seem to have a thought of my own
This day.

INQUISITIVE COLLEGE STUDENTS,
alert to living in an awesome time,
probe issues ancient yet perennial:

"What is man?"

"Know thyself."

"What ought I to do?"
matters perplexing,
profound,

disturbingly personal.

They need a ministry
alert,

responsive and supporting,
prophetic, also probing,
articulate in the issues of today,
even innovative;

mindful always that so awesome an assignment
takes all there is of us —
and God.
